What skin tags are and why they appear
Skin tags are small, soft growths, usually skin-coloured or slightly darker, attached to the skin by a narrow base. When the diagnosis is certain they are generally benign, but not every bump is a skin tag.
The typical areas are the neck, the eyelids, the armpits and other areas of friction, and that is no coincidence: constant rubbing of skin against skin or clothing is one of the main reasons they form. Other factors include genetic tendency, hormonal changes and pregnancy.
They are not dangerous and do not medically require treatment. The reasons for removal are usually practical or aesthetic: a tag that catches on a necklace, a collar or a comb, one that is irritated by shaving, or simply one that bothers you when you look in the mirror. Both reasons are equally legitimate.
